Nestled hidden in the east of Tokyo is one of Tokyo’s hidden gems for foodies. The little known Sunamachi Ginza is a shopping street packed with stalls and shacks selling a variety of traditional Japanese food and drinks as well as stores selling vintage clothes, groceries and tea. Sunamachi Ginza is, for those in the know, considered one of the best places to go to sample a range of tasty artisanal street foods from yakitori or dumplings to oden or even Okinawan delights. Sunamachi Ginza is located in Tokyo’s shitamachi area and has a lovely old world charm that seems a million miles from the hustle, bustle and skyscrapers of western Tokyo. Forget chain shops and mass produced brands. Here you will find homemade artisanal delicacies sold from family run businesses. See how Tokyoites go about their day to lives while tasting an array of delicious street foods on this 4 hour walking tour.
Shitamchi literally translates as downtown. While most foreigners would consider the downtown to be the center of the city Tokyo’s Shitamachi generally refers to the area east of the Emperor’s palace. Often considered the poorer area of Tokyo when compared with the skyscrapers, departments stores and bright neon of areas such as Shinjuku, Harajuku or Shibuya, Tokyo’s shitamachi area maintains an atmosphere of the old Tokyo. The shitamachi thrived during the Edo period and traces of this bygone era can still be found in the narrow lanes, hidden temples and bustling shopping streets that remain until this day. A tour to the ‘other’ side of Tokyo should definitely not be missed!
