About Kawagoe

Kawagoe, is a historic city 30 minutes by train from central Tokyo. The city, known as little Edo for its old world warehouse district, temples and ruined castle, is a fascinating town to soak up a historic atmosphere of Old Japan. It makes a perfect day trip from the hustle and bustle of Modern Tokyo. The town was an old merchant town with strong trade links to Tokyo. The main street, Kurazukuri Street, is lined with Edo era merchant warehouses which now house restaurants and traditional craft shops (great for souvenir shopping). The area retains an ambiance of old japan and you can experience what life 100 years ago would have been like. Kawagoe is also home to a number of significant temples and shrines including the venerable Kita-in temple which houses a part of the old Edo castle. Kawagoe cuisine is delicious too, famous for its Ryotei (gourmet Japanese) restaurants, sweet potato dishes, eel dishes and traditional handmade sweets. A trip to Kawagoe offers a fascinating insight into old Japan as well as feast for the eyes and tongue. Join us for a day trip into the past!
